A wrist sprain is an injury that occurs when the ligaments connecting the bones in the wrist are stretched or torn, often resulting from sudden impact or force applied to the hand. This can cause pain, swelling, and limited mobility in the affected wrist. Common activities leading to wrist sprains include falls, sports-related incidents, or accidents where the hand is used to break a fall. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, possibly imaging studies, and assessment of the range of motion.

Treatment for a wrist sprain generally involves the R.I.C.E. method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Resting the injured wrist is crucial to allow the ligaments to heal. Applying ice helps reduce swelling and pain, and compression with a bandage provides support and limits swelling. Elevating the wrist above heart level further aids in minimizing swelling. Additionally, anti-inflammatory medications may be recommended by a healthcare professional to manage pain and inflammation. In more severe cases, a splint or brace may be prescribed to immobilize the wrist and facilitate healing. Physical therapy exercises may also be introduced to improve strength and flexibility during the recovery process. As with any injury, individuals should consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
